Japanese domain names are the gateway to developing an online presence in Japanese business
By working with Japan Registry, you have access to the following Japanese domain name options:
Two types of Japanese domain names:
1) Unrestricted General Purpose Names (e.g., .jp)
2) Restricted Professional Names (e.g., co.jp)
Japanese domain names in two different formats:
1) Standard English characters
2) Traditional Japanese characters
Unrestricted General Purpose Names (e.g., .jp)
.jp domain names have only been offered since May of 2001, but since that date have become the standard for use among online businesses in Japan. Registrations of .jp domain names have skyrocketed, following closely the growing importance of the online economy in Japan.
There are many reasons why the .jp domain name has proven so popular:
- It is easily recognized and trusted by the Japanese consumer
- It is easy to obtain; there are NO restrictions on registering or using these names
- There is NO limit to the number of registrations possible by one entity (companies can now create online identities for all of their products and business units)
- With Japan Registry, there is NO need to host on Japanese servers. You can host this domain anywhere in the world, making it easy to approach the Japanese market from overseas
Japan Registry is proud to be the leading provider of .jp domain names.
Restricted Professional Names (e.g., co.jp)
Restricted "second-level" domains are still available, and in many cases, are the primary identity for different organizational types. The most important restricted domains, by far, are the domain names reserved for corporations (.co.jp).
.co.jp domain names are subject to the following restrictions:
- Registrants MUST be a
a. Japanese company (OR)
b. Foreign company with a registered branch (or other valid Japanese business license)
- Only one domain name is available per independent Japanese organization
Although .co.jp domain names are extremely restricted, they are critical for all firms with an active presence in Japan. As a result, many companies wishing to solidify their online presence often take the next step and open branch offices in Japan.
Please see our FAQs section for more information about the requirements for .co.jp domain names.
Standard English characters
Japan Registry offers both .jp and .co.jp in the standard English character set.
The World Wide Web is still dominated by the English language standard, and of course, Japanese online businesses use English language domain names.
Traditional Japanese characters
Japan Registry offers registration services in all three traditional Japanese character sets (Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji), for .jp.
Why is this important?
As more Japanese consumers who are less comfortable with English begin to go online, firms who use local character sets in addition to English in their domain names will enjoy increased mainstream traffic. For native Japanese speakers, Japanese characters are "natural", simple, easy to use, and easy to remember.
NOTE:
All Japanese domain names are subject to the following rules:
- .jp domains containing Japanese characters can be from 1 to 15 characters, and can contain any Kanji, Katakana, or Hiragana character as well some additional characters such as a hyphen
- English and Japanese names in ASCII characters can be from 3 to 63 characters
- English character domains can contain a-z, 0-9, and hyphens
- You must use a Japanese address for the administrative contact of .jp domains. This does not need to be a company or even where the administrative contact lives.
- .jp domains can be transferred to other parties.
- Anyone can register a .jp domain name, provided a Japanese address is supplied, and Japan Registry can provide a local address to it's customers so that they can comply with this requirement.
- There is no limit to the number of .jp domains anyone or any company can purchase
