General Questions
Q1. What is a domain name?
A1.A domain name is used to identify a particular computer or server on the Internet.
The true address of a server is actually a unique numeric address such as 123.43.1.5 called an IP number.
While typing in the IP number will take you to a server, users cannot be expected to remember
random numbers. Domain names solve this problem by allowing people to use an easy-to-remember name
to get to the website. For example, typing "www.cnn.com" will take the user to the IP address being used
by that Website.

Q2. What is a Top Level Domain (TLD)?
A2. A top level domain is the .com part of a domain name. This suffix at the end can imply
the kind of organization that runs the website with .com being commercial, .org being organizations,
.name being individuals, and so on. These domains names are called global Top Level Domains or gTLDs.
There are also country code Top Level Domains (ccTLDs) such as .jp (Japan) and co.uk (United Kingdom).

Q3. What do I need to register a domain name at Japan Registry?
A3.Registration requirements are different depending on the domain type that you want to
register. All .jp domain names are fully automatic through Japan Registry and require only a credit
card to register. However, .co.jp requires the registrant to be a registered company in Japan and
limits the number of domains to one per company. A copy of your Japanese business registration or
"tokibotouhon" will need to be faxed to Japan Registry to complete you order.

Q7. How can I best protect my company and product names online?
A7.The most safe and affordable way to protect your interests online is to register your
company and product names and potential misspellings. The registration cost is miniscule when
compared to that of international litigation. Remember that for a given name there are five potential
domain names that can be registered; the Romaji (English) spelling .jp name, the Kanji spelling .jp name,
the Hiragana spelling .jp name, the Katakana spelling .jp name, and the Romaji (English) spelling .co.jp
name.

Q11. How can I register a Japanese domain without knowing Japanese or having a way of inputting Japanese?
A11.
Remember, it is possible to register Japanese domain names in English characters.
If you would like to register Japanese domain names in the native character sets,
but do not know Japanese, you can refer to a Japanese translation service for help
in translating the words you would like to register into Japanese. Please refer to
Jeffrey's
Japanese-English Dictionary or a similar resource to
translate the word/words you are looking for. Japan Registry does not offer translations due
to the high risk of misspelling a non-Japanese name in Japanese.
